East End Cellars Soup Kitchen 2022

East End Cellars Soup Kitchen is BACK for 2022

supporting Hutt St Centre and Catherine House

Inspired to continually help people experiencing homelessness in Adelaide, in 2019 Margie & Michael Andrewartha along with Simon Bryant created the concept of the Soup Kitchen involving local chefs, who provide their talent and time free of charge, to produce soups for one day. Proceeds were kindly donated to Hutt St Centre to support people doing it tough on the streets of Adelaide.

From Thursday 14 July 2022, and every following Thursday for six weeks, a well-known chef will cook up a warming dish, with the proceeds going to Hutt St Centre and Catherine House to support their efforts in helping women experiencing homelessness.

How your support helps

A staggering 6,000 people are currently experiencing homeless in our home state of South Australia. 40.3% of all people experiencing homelessness are women, many have fled domestic violence and have no savings and no super.

Hutt St Centre

Each month Hutt St Centre supports 850 people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, with women representing 31% of people seeking help.

When people first walk through our doors, we help them to address their immediate needs, like a hot shower, a warm meal, and a change of clothes or even a phone recharge. We then wrap our 20+ visiting services around each person to provide support ranging from medical check-ups to financial counselling.

Since July 2021, Hutt St Centre has supported 670 women experiencing homelessness. At the time of seeking help sadly 203 were sleeping rough and 131 were couch surfing or staying in temporary accommodation options. Assistance provided has included access to laundry facilities, health and wellbeing services, Women’s Support Group, along with 3,458 meals in a safe, welcoming place have been provided as we walk alongside each person on their journey out of homelessness.

These essential primary care services are funded by the generosity of donors and fundraising initiatives such as East End Cellars Soup Kitchen.

Catherine House

Catherine House offers crisis, longer term accommodation and support services for women experiencing homelessness across South Australia.

Nightly, Catherine House provides crisis accommodation and support to 54 women. We are the only organisation providing this service in South Australia.

Our programs and services are recovery-orientated and we provide a trauma informed care practice. Catherine House deals with the immediate issues created by homelessness and supports women in planning a future that helps her sustain housing and builds a life that is meaningful and purposeful for her. In 2021, 94% of women left Catherine House to stable housing.

For women, homelessness is primarily driven by domestic and family violence, mental and physical health issues, poverty and a lack of safe, affordable housing.

Catherine House relies on the support of the community to ensure we can provide women with not only a safe place to stay but a variety of services to support their recovery.

At Catherine House we aim to end the homelessness for every woman who so bravely walks through our doors – for good.

Funds raised from this event, will be allocated to our Crisis Accommodation Service. This program is the entry point to Catherine House and the first door that is opened for women to start the journey of ending their homelessness journey.

In addition to safe and secure supported accommodation, women also have access to medical and legal support, housing pathways, wellbeing activities and education and employment opportunities. It cost’s approximately $144 a night to accommodate and support a woman at Catherine House including all of the above mentioned services.
